Empyreans (Exogenus empyriana) are a diverse species of intelligent humanoids that inhabit the Empyrium. They are by far the dominant species in both of these areas.
Empyreans are a spacefaring species that, unlike humans, largely reject the notion of nation states. Rather, they owe allegiance to their race and to their homeworld, which form the bulk of their social identity. There is a high degree of diversity between the cultures and societies found on Empyrean worlds, despite the fact that factors such as language are practically universal to the species. Peculiarly, Empyreans as a whole are known to reject the notion of religion, or faith in any form of divinity.
The Empyreans are a powerful force within their local space, but are otherwise isolationist and seldom interact with galactic affairs. Empyreans are not an inherently xenophobic race - trade is welcomed, and Empyrean products can sometimes be found across the galaxy - however to see an Empyrean beyond their local space is rare. If it were not for their isolationism, it has been noted that their collectives have the potential to become major players in galactic affairs, though it is not in their best interests.
Races and subspecies
The species began to diverge from its homeworld, Sceraxa, nearly 10,000 years before present. As such, divergent features among populations are only subtle in most cases. There are 5 main "races" (or more accurately, populations) of the standard species, as well as two distinct subspecies. Tsadenians are by far the largest of these races, constituting the significant majority of Empyreans. The other four are much smaller in comparison, but are not necessarily localised - Primians constitute the majority of the Empyreans living on the eastern worlds within the Empyrium as well as some of the New Colonies. Deirans inhabit the Western Reaches, Alkidians inhabit Alkid, and Arbaeans constitute the overarching genealogy of the former Colonial Collective, the New Colonies, and the disputed Outer Rim Colonies.
Corvidia is one of the known subspecies of Empyrean, who are native to the planet Corvid. They are known for their significantly shorter stature, stockier build, and tolerance to high gravity environments. The other is Inviria, the population of Empyreans native to Invirian Space, which has since had its contents moved to orbit near San. Invirians were highly attuned to the memoria, and as a result their internal biology was practically non-existent, although their external features are markedly Empyrean.
