The San System is a star system located in the Mid Rim (I9), and a member system of the Empyrium. It contains a large blue giant star with thirty-two planets orbiting it, twenty-six of which were formerly planets in Invirian. A smaller main-sequence satellite star has two additional planets, San and Eos. It is a free system, meaning that although it is under the direct jurisdiction of the Imperial Authority of the Empyrium, this power is rarely - if at all - exercised. Furthermore, it hosts the symbolic capital planet of the Empyrium as a whole - San II (simply known as San) - which functions as the cultural, political and economic centre of the free systems. The most populous planet is Inviria, the sole ecumenopolis within the Empyrium and by far its most populous planet.
The San system is a confederacy of its populated planets, which are all free planets. The system's current High Representative is Wisteria, the Madam Administrator of the capital city of Solanta, and its junior representative is Guinevere, the High Suzerain of Eos.
With a population of 1.2 trillion (of which Inviria and Eos constitute 75%), the San System accounts for just over a third of the Empyrium's entire population - grossly disproportionate to the relatively dispersed nature of inhabited systems in the collective. As this was not always the case, San has been viewed by other free planets as a growing threat to the status quo maintained by Empyrean central governance, with some considering it to possess the power and the means to directly challenge the Imperial Authority if it wanted to/
