Vorxans are a variably intelligent insectoid species native to the planet Vortakhx in Unknown Space, operating under a hierarchical hivemind that ranges from workers and drones, to queens, to finally the Vorxan Matriarch at the very top of their "society". While the Queens and Matriarch are truly sapient and sentient, the workers and drones for most of their history were wholly non-sentient and mindless, until the High Priest granted them sentience (but not sapience) to improve their capabilities in warfare. Their homeworld and most other planets they inhabit have been rendered uninhabitable with a toxic atmosphere and countless winding hives infesting everything below their surface.
History
The early history of the Vorxans is relatively unknown, as once the Vorxans emerged and infested their homeworld all life and traces of what could have been a society were destroyed.
The High Priest of the Elder Overseers, after consolidating his rule over Solarya, moved onto Vortakhx as the next world he desired for his Celestial Army. He offered the Vorxans the possibility to expand and infest other worlds as he descended upon their world. To his surprise, the Vorxans did not accept his offer, instead attempting to infest and consume him to further reproduce, forcing him to exterminate billions of them to rid himself of them. He pondered, realising that it was impossible that all of the tens of thousands of queens on the planet could cohesively coordinate to the degree they were, leading to him uncovering the existence of the Vorxan Matriarch as the 'true' ruler of the hives. He briefly returned to Vortakhx and abducted the Matriarch, leaving the planet in chaos until he returned.
He was unable to find a reason of how the Matriarch controlled the Vorxans, leading to him to choose a risky option of consuming her in order to absorb her conscience so he could become the new Matriarch despite the possibility of the Matriarch gaining control of him as well or remaining within his mind. Once this process was completed, he descended back down onto Vortakhx, manipulating his new subjects to his own whims to grant them heightened intelligence that made them capable of much greater feats than before, replacing their mindless swarming with a coordinated yet autonomous wave.
Once the High Priest was killed, the Vorxans were briefly placed under the control of the Wei'vir Realm before managing to break away once more to establish the new 'Vorxan Empire'.
