Black Opal is the patriarch of all Kaphisians, founder of their society, and formerly their ruler. Alongside his four closest aides - Voidite, Samnsonite, Amesidian and Carbonado, he ruled over the Kaphisians for thousands of years until the sudden collapse of their society was ushered in by Samnsonite's "disappearance."

Black Opal's birth date is unknown, and is thought to be pre-eminent. Alongside Voidite and Samnsonite, he is a unique gem, although he is a fusion of an Opal and an Obsidian. Under his rule, Kaphisian society was sealed off from the rest of Theia by a barrier held together through the manipulation of Voidite's resources and Samnsonite's powers. This allowed the Kaphi to flourish even during the Theian Cataclysm. When the Insurgency occured on Yata, Black Opal devised a plan to establish a colony on the war-torn, (and at the time) abandoned planet, but a catastrophic crash in Nuan Krovh sent him to the Realm of the Forgotten on the brink of death, shattering his soul in the process. He recuperated quickly, but the incident left severe mental trauma that further exacerbated his delusions of grandeur, tendency to pathologically lie, and plunged Kaphi into disarray on his eventual return. His encounters with the counter-Insurgents almost always emerged fruitless for the latter, and at one point he attempted to mislead Lazuli about Carbonado's true intentions regarding the Digiverse, in the belief all hope was lost. However, faced with Amesidian's Flavros Project, Black Opal recovered hope, along with the majority of his mental integrity, helping Sakura and Diamond-1 and 2 to execute Amesidian and Samekh.

In 462 CE, Black Opal committed suicide and arrived on the planet Eos, learning that he could communicate with his soulless self and control that body present on Theia. In an attempt to protect the people of Eos, Theia and Yata from certain planetary war over a perceived Eosian threat (and potentially its resources), he convinced his comrades to join his Theia self in another suicide to arrive at Eos, and cover his tracks in the process. On Eos, he resides in Sosaki City.
