Kraken Base (Narakamian Creole: Keraxa Xeros Seladis) is a research institute and colony located in Venus on the north of Phoebe continent. The base is situated in Nereid Chasm within the highlands of San Guinevere. Relatively cooler air temperatures and lower pressures, plus physical protection from natural disasters within the chasm were the two key factors that led to Kraken Base becoming the first permanent human settlement on the planet. Operated by the JADIRAD institute, who also run the TERAPRO, Asolab and Vannakaram facilities, Kraken Base is manned by 13,000 permanent resident staff.

Kraken Base was founded in 419 CE by scientists from the Vannakaram facility on the planet Narakam. They were handpicked by the JADIRAD institute for their experience on working in extreme environments. The location was selected for two reasons: firstly, the cooler temperatures of around 360°C allowed ships to land and take off without significant damage, and secondly the much hotter than average cave temperatures (600°C) proved necessary for the experiments that the Institute wished to fund. Kraken Base is easily reached through Asolab and TERAPRO through its state-of-the-art modified metaphysical reconstruction teleport. In 472 CE Kraken Base was 'nationalised' by the Yatan-Theian Federation and placed under the guidance of the Department of Scientific Research in a plea deal to avoid the consequences of the JADIRAD Institute's Pro-Commonwealth leaning. After the Second Concordance in 496 CE, Kraken Base regained much of its autonomy under the Scientific Research Division.
