The Laconian War (also known in various stages as the Laconia-Empyrium war, the Laconia Conflict or the Empyrium Civil War) is a conflict being fought between The Empyrium and secessionist worlds under the Free World Alliance, headed by Laconia.

The Sentor Banquet Incident

The annual Imperial Conference took place on the planet Sentor in 474 CE - the first time in decades where all of the Empyrium's member systems were in attendance. The ill-fated banquet on Sentor was interrupted when a terrorist attack killed everyone on board a hastily-departing Laconian vessel; notably the high representative of the system, Lyris Amaliana, was not found on board. Although public blame on the attack was placed on Isla, the attack was co-ordinated by the Laconians themselves with covert support from the Invirian Ascendancy to create chaos in the Empyrium, but more importantly to signal the beginning of the uprising on Laconia.

Beginning of the war

Laconia declared its independence and took control of its local space - concurrently, they assaulted the planet Iophiuchi with overwhelming force, circulating rumours that the planet had an unknown sponsor, which was in fact Invirian. With Empyrean Space left undefended, Ivrim was invaded by the Laconians and followed suit, declaring its secession whilst the Empyrium rapidly tried to organise its Border Force into a standing navy. Although the Laconians eventually retreated from Iophiuchi, the Empyrium suffered a lasting defeat that left them vulnerable to another attack. New Earendel and Corvidium were the next to fall to Laconia, with the four secessionist planets becoming the "core worlds" of the Free World Alliance. Around this time, the Border Force reorganised into the New Colonies Defence Force, forming a front line upon which the war would unfold, while Laconia began the lengthy siege of Vector D space.

The Laconians would then return to inflict a decisive defeat in the Second Battle of Iophiuchi, gaining full control of the planet and its local space. The Empyrium responded by pushing to liberate Ivrim, with limited success. Meanwhile, a Laconia-sanctioned uprising on Ilus took control of the planet, and the planet Veriyan would soon fall. With the threat growing out of control, the Emperor mandated the organisation of a grand Unified Navy to combat the threat, which was ready for its first wave of deployment within the month. With the whole of the Empyrium involved, the second stage of the war began, marked by a chaotic exchange of systems.

Empyrium Civil War

Laconia responded to the intervention with an unprecedented push towards Empyrium worlds - this allowed Empyrean forces to fall behind their lines and liberate both Veriyan and Iophiuchi. Little did they know that this was Laconia's plan all along - with Empyrean forces now set on reclaiming lost worlds, the Laconian forces scattered and invaded six more worlds, while ultimately losing control of four of their occupied ones. This left the Empyrium with three garrisoned worlds deep within enemy territory, with Laconian garrisons now having relocated to more significant, strategic planets. As paranoia over this "planet rush" grew, forces eventually settled on defence of owned worlds, and frontline fighting resumed.
