The Altairans are a sapient humanoid-amphiboid species native to the planet Altair-3 located at Grid O19 in the Milky Way Galaxy. They have a typical humanoid frame of two arms, two legs, a torso, and a head on top with dark hair growing from their scalp. Altairans evolved to spend most of their days in the vast oceans of their homeworld while having their homes and young on land, making them agile swimmers capable of breathing both in air and underwater, for which they have gills on both their neck and the sides of their face. Due to them needing to swim to deep depths to hunt for some of their prey prior to becoming advanced, they developed remarkably large eyes capable of seeing in even the darkest of underwater environments, where their bioluminescent green-coloured pupils allowed them to remain visible to their fellow Altairans. The least obvious of their water-based adaptations is a mucus they naturally secrete that thinly covers their skin if not cleaned off intended to keep away pathogens when underwater, which also makes their hair typically very greasy and stiff. Altairans are sexless and therefore reproduce asexually, though they do often form long-term romantic bonds with multiple partners to raise their children collectively if they decide to have them.
The Altairans managed to advance to the point of establishing a unified interplanetary government capable of FTL Travel known as "The Altair", which later joined the Yatan-Theian Accord after centuries of friendly contact with the Accord's Humans and various other member-species, with this diversity being one of the deciding factors. After having joined the Accord, they reorganized their governing body into the 'Technate of Altair' to represent them within the Accord, infusing it with their ideals of technical and socialistic governance opposed to market-driven greed and hyper-individualization, eventually advancing to the point of establishing various colony-worlds to inhabit. As may be expected, Altairans greatly value fields such as science, technology, and engineering, which make up a plurality of the jobs available in their society due to their views towards 'societal advancement' being among the best deeds one can work towards.
