Nihilantis, the divine form of Andrei Varady from an alternate universe, was the former Hydro Archon and God of Intuition who presided over Aquilae until 300 BCE, and then a short interlude of presidence from 231 CE to 239 CE. A member of the Nine, Nihilantis was perhaps the most enigmatic figure among the divine, being the primary indirect cause of the Cataclysm. Nonetheless, his rule as a God is celebrated, even in the years following his demise at his own hands to defeat the former Geo Archon Miraak, and the influence of his direct rule is still seen today in the facility known as TERAPRO.
Native to Yata, Nihilantis was born as Andrei Varady in the year 179 CE, albeit in a different timeline of presumed castrovalvic origin. In this timeline (one of presumed many timelines) "Andrei" had his divine awakening after reaching Theia during the Insurgency, around 204 CE. Utilising his power, he went back in time to join the Nine a few years after Triton and Tenno had established their realms, becoming Nihilantis. This created a yet-to-be-solved paradox as to how Nihilantis and Andrei exist, as both entities would have needed each other for their own existence. Nihilantis' paradoxical existence was later recognised by Sanmor, another form of Andrei from yet another set of timelines. Carbonado, (formerly a trusted aide of Nihilantis and later a personal friend of Andrei), hypothesised that an unknown event must have occurred to have "shattered Andrei's being across time and space."
Sanmor Nihilantis
In the universe existed an enigmatic dual entity; the Sanmor Nihilantis, most often referred to by its separate names. Of castrovalvic origin, the dual entity arose as a result of abnormal deviations across all of Andrei Varady's timelines, leading to universes having some combination of the three people; Andrei, Sanmor and Nihilantis. After the Cataclysm on Theia, the entity was formed after Sanmor from the future (a blatant paradox) killed the Hydro Archon, Nihilantis, after he descended down to Theia to join his people in celebrating victory against Kanar. Absorbing his power, the newly-created Sanmor Nihilantis launched to the skies and began his destruction of Theia, now known as the Theian Cataclysm.
The Nihilanth, better known as Nihilantis, is a mysterious being that, according to Tritonists, holds immense untapped powers that can only be unleashed through a strong possession. Contrastingly, Iulanists of the ancient nation Aquilae worship him as the Hydro Archon. Nihilantis does have free will - as evidenced by the fact it can force people to forget the past, present or the future, but this has only ever happened when Nihilantis is under manual control, i.e. possession.
Sanmor, (a contraction of "Sanctum Mortis", Latin for "Saint of Death") is another alternate of Andrei, who is an evil persona of Andrei, having grown older and become disillusioned with reality in some universes. Minimally dangerous on his own, Sanmor draws strength from other beings, such as Nihilantis, to initiate his plans.
Collectively, the three versions of Andrei all seek a different path of life. Sanmor seeks one of destruction, Nihilantis sees one of seclusion and Andrei seeks benevolence. It has been observed that any two versions in the same universe ultimately are drawn to each other to spread benevolence, destruction or isolation, but the mere existence of a third negates any potential power whatsoever. To unleash such power, the third must be eliminated. In the case of Yata, the partners were Sanmor and Nihilantis (which is where the colloquial title is drawn from as it is the most familiar) and the third was Andrei, which is why the two initiated the Insurgency to draw him out of hiding.
Manifestations (as Nihilantis)
Nihilantis is known to manifest himself in many ways. The picture shown to the right is the most common manifestation of Nihilantis - a red giant star. Espionage has confirmed that the star is actually a vessel of some sort, such as a spaceship, yet it can still function as a star in its own right. The star manifestation is very much associated with his insidious nature - he almost always takes up this form when watching Yata from afar.
The other significant forms are:
- A country in it's own right - Flamingia. Flamingia is commonly mistaken as the nation of the Iujados, (specifically the Nihilist Iujados) but this is not the case.
- A rare and mysterious entity known as "The Nihilanth." This is generally accepted as his true manifestation, but has not been witnessed on a first-hand experience before.
- The Hydro Archon; the god who presides over Aquilae.
Other Details
He is known to possess a vast amount of void energy - a lot of this had come from the now empty reserves under Tritonia and Asophania. This has been hypothesised to fuel his power, and his ability to manifest different entities. It is also known that Nihilantis and Asophania otherwise have a deep connection, although neither of them are willing to disclose anything about their past lives interacting with each other.
