Mercury is the closest planet to Alpha Sol and the smallest (non-dwarf) planet in the Alpha Sol System. It is a terrestrial planet with a heavily cratered surface due to the planet having no geological activity and an extremely tenuous atmosphere. Despite being the smallest planet in the Alpha Sol System with a mean diameter of 4,880 km, Mercury is dense enough to have roughly the same surface gravity as Mars. Mercury has a dynamic magnetic field with a strength about 1% of that of Yata's and has no natural satellites. As of 498 CE, Mercury is only inhabited by roughly 67,8 thousand Human migrants that established shielded habitats designed to facilitate mining operations.
Government and Politics

The entirety of Mercury is governed by the 'State of Mercury, a Unitary Assembly-independent Republic established by the Yatan-Theian Accord in 498 CE as a governing body to administer a series of new settlements which were established on the planet largely for mining purposes. The government of Mercury is divided into 3 primary branches, the 'Executive', the 'Legislative', and the 'Judicial', with each of these branches being relegated responsibility over a specific field of governance.
The Executive Government is headed by the 'Governor', the joint head-of-state and head-of-government of Mercury responsible for directing the state, its cabinet, and its government departments. The Legislative Government consists of the 'Administrative Council of Mercury', a loose body consisting of 3 representatives from each settlement on the planet which together elect the Governor (who does not directly answer to them). The Judicial Government consists of the 'Governing Court of Mercury', a court body responsible for interpreting the law and issuing punishments to the worst criminals.
Until 498 CE, Mercury was essentially completely uninhabited and ignored due to its disadvantageous orbit extremely close to Alpha Sol, making its 'day-side' burning hot and its 'night-side' freezing cold while also rotating just enough so that the two 'sides' would shift and move, preventing the formation of a more moderate 'twilight zone'. Despite this, Mercury remained the largest untapped resource source within the Alpha Sol System itself, therefore the Accord sponsored a number of interstellar mining corporations to set up shop on the planet in order to provide the several inhabited worlds of the system with a more local source of raw materials to counteract the increasing reliance on imports beyond the System in order to maintain self sufficiency. Only certain areas on Mercury host permanent settlements, with the north and south poles being home to the largest population centres while small groups of others reside within lava tubes or moving habitats that move along the terminator between night and day. The largest 'city' and capital of Mercury is Hermes Base located at its south pole, a fairly developed region home to the government and the headquarters of most corporations involved with the mining business.
