Mars is the seventh and furthest terrestrial (non-dwarf) planet from Alpha Sol. It is the second smallest planet within the system, and is primarily composed out of vast rocky deserts and craters, with some exceptions such as its icy polar regions and certain artificially constructed habitats. Mars has a primarily carbon dioxide atmosphere and two small uninhabited moons named Phobos and Deimos. Mars is home to the native 'Martians', a Humanoid species adapted to Mars' harsh environment. These natives would go on to create the Martian Empire, an interstellar civilization which spanned across several systems in the Local Bubble before its destruction by The Quhanim, leading to all survivors largely being exiled. The largest exile community, the 'Republic of Xin-Martia', collaborated with the Yatan-Theian Accord to resettle the planet with both Martians and Humans, leading to the birth of the Second Martian Republic which later joined the Yatan-Theian Federation, only to be restored as a Planetary Government within the Yatan-Theian Accord after the Second Concordance.

Mars is one of the more populated planets in the Alpha Sol System thanks to its close proximity to Yata and Theia, alongside the post-Exile colonization efforts turning Mars into a "refugee planet" of some sorts home to lost peoples from various worlds. Civilian travel to the planet is nowadays fairly open, with countless open homes in large shielded "bubble" environments for humans and other oxygen breathing species, often surrounded by vast settlements inhabited by the native Martian Species[1], whose respiratory system is designed to absorb oxygen out of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. While the optimism of "taking back" Mars since its initial destruction was initially quite high, the Martian settlements themselves are among of the poorest cities within the entirety of the Yatan-Theian Accord.

Demographics

Mars is a rather diverse planet, with roughly 39% of its population nowadays being native Martians and 57% being Humans, with the remaining 4% belonging to numerous other species. The Martian population tends to be poorer than their Human counterparts, although they also have a disproportionately high level of influence in the Martian government. The Human population is significantly more urbanized than their native counterparts due to needing to live in shielded habitats, though respirators allowing for travel beyond them (or into them in the case of the Martians) are fairly common. Martian Humans come from a variety of backgrounds, although a majority are of Poavakian descent, with those of Polskan descent coming second, while notable other ethnic communities include Sipedroans, Sizzleans, and Yoricans.

Government and Politics

Flag of the Third Martian Republic

The Third Martian Republic is the sole governing body to hold jurisdiction over Mars, operating as a Federal Presidential Crowned Republic divided into a number of autonomous 'Provinces' responsible for governing individual regions of the planet. The Third Martian Republic's government is divided into 3 branches, the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judiciary.

The Executive Government is headed by the 'Crown of Mars', a democratically-elected head of state which serves for a 10 year terms despite holding royal titles and attending to 'royal' duties. The Legislative Government takes the form of the 'Martian Parliament', a bicameral parliament divided between a upper house known as the regionally-appointed 'Privy Council' and a democratically elected lower house known as the 'Martian Assembly', with the Assembly largely being responsible for drafting laws and the Council being responsible for reviewing and then rejecting or approving said laws. The Judicial Government is composed of the 'Sovereign Court of Mars' responsible for interpreting laws, handling high-profile court cases, and reviewing the actions of the government, with all 11 justices being selected for 15 year terms by Crown and Privy Council approval.

The government of Mars is situated in the city of Xin-Aresia, a major metropolis located in the Hellas Planitia near the ruins of 'old' Aresia which acted as the capital of the Martian Empire prior to its fall, sharing the same 'federal capital district'. The sole other province-level urban area is Olympus Mons City, the second-largest city on the planet situated around the Olympus Mons Space Elevator.

Political Parties

A number of political parties are represented within the Martian Assembly, with a vast majority of the representatives belonging to some kind of party. The following is a catalogue of notable member parties;

Economy

The Third Martian Republic has a partially state-directed regulated market economy where certain vital industries are placed under state-control while non-essential and smaller commercial activity is largely left into the hands of private corporations. The profits brought by these state-owned companies allows Mars to offer a welfare system to each of its constituents, although despite this the planet has been known to occasionally suffer from economic difficulties in comparison to the more wealthy planets* of Yata, Theia, Titan, and even Venus.
