The Varinn Empire is a collective of colonies and planets situated in the far 'northwest' corner of the Milky Way Galaxy, occupying a large section of space between Unknown Space and the Outer Rim. The Empire is divided into 11 'Facets' which act as its highest administrative divisions alongside multiple 'Reserve Worlds' home to various minority species under nominal 'protection' despite their often inadequate living conditions. Administratively, the Varinn Emprie at least 'officially' functions as an authoritarian imperial state under the rule of Matriarch 'Hirdai Neirn', though due to the Matriarch having been rendered incapacitated to the point of being unable to communicate with the Empire's individuals, leaving a collective of individuals known as 'The Seven Devout' to act as its rulers, acting as the highest authority over all subordinate castes within their society, namely the 'Luminants' in charge of luxuries and ruling planets and 'Graviants' responsible for leading armies and handling scientific/military tasks, whom both oversee the 'Quariants' which serve as soldiers and 'Praiants' who handle construction and engineering, whom are above 'Mariants' who act as servants.
As a quirk of their biology, all Varinns theoretically have incredibly varying states of 'individuality', with the Empire solely governing and largely consisting of the separated individuals. An unknown number of Varinns, especially those of the lower caste may have their individuality (either temporarily or permanently) suppressed into a state known to the Empire as the 'Coalescence', removing most distinctions and colours in their physical forms and altering their personalities to be even more focused on 'collective needs' than the authoritarian command-economy present in the rest of the Empire. The Devout tend to be under the belief that this state is them becoming one with Hirdai Neirn despite this being impossible to confirm, though regardless of such beliefs they tend to not see significant problem with the existence of this state as individuals undergoing 'Coalescence' are usually receptive to issued orders from their usual superordinates, though identifying them and their numbers is effectively impossible.
