Kalmykia, officially the Free Commune (of Kalmykia), is an recognised sovereign territory situated in southern Tritonia located to the west of the expansive Volga delta region, fifty kilometres from the major Rus city of Astrakhan. Its claimed territory encompasses the region inhabited by the Kalmyk Peoples with a population of roughly 274,000. There is no official capital city, however one of the largest cities is Adyk which generally acts as its de facto capital.
The country achieved de facto independence following the unprecedented escalation of an insurgency in eastern Halmigla, which began as a struggle against the globalist central government. The insurgency initially prompted a hasty evacuation that depopulated the eastern half of the country, however many villages chose to remain, having sympathised with the rebel cause. Midway through the war, it was discovered that the insurgents were receiving manpower support from rebel groups in the neighbouring Rus Republic, leading to a nationwide border closure, which the Rus Republic cooperated with. However, left unchecked, this fostered a revolution that almost led to the collapse of Halmigla. Following threats of similar insurgencies elsewhere in the Caucasus that compelled the League against direct intervention, Halmigla was forced to concede to the rebels, however they refused to sign a peace treaty, making the region a frozen conflict zone.
The Free Commune is a stateless collective of anarcho-communist communes, ranging from small rural villages to city districts. There is no government, however informal gatherings of commune representatives are common for the purposes of mutual defence, much like the confederal format seen in Caucasian League. There is no formal economy and bartering is encouraged between communes, however the Tritonian ruble is sometimes used when individuals trade.
