Gensokyo (Genian: じんそこ, Jinsokō, or Jinsokou; Japanese: 幻想郷, Gensōgō or Gensoukyou), traditionally known in English as Genia (Japanese and Genian: ジーニア, Jīnia) was a landlocked country in Orientalis, Theia. Situated in the central core of the Orientalis Mountains, Gensokyo was almost entirely mountainous. Sanctus (or Sanctorio) was the nation's capital, whereas the only other major city was Kantor (or Kantorio.)
Gensokyo was one of the least populated Theian countries, and by extension one of the least densely populated countries. Owing to its highly mountainous terrain. Gensokyo's population was concentrated on the only two major cities within the country, holding 80% of the country's entire population between them. Gensokyo was not divided into any administrative divisions whatsoever, other than six ceremonial historical regions.
Gensokyo had been a significant location since prehistory. The area was the first of the elemental nations to appear, and under Tenno's suzerainty Gensokyo became a bountiful, isolationist nation. Until the Theian Cataclysm, a huge magical barrier surrounded the entirety of Orientalis. However, this shrunk to protect an area only 10% of its original size, congruent with the borders of Gensokyo during the post-cataclysm era, to protect the cities of Sanctus and Kantor from the effects of the Cataclysm. This allowed Genian culture to persist through to the common era. After Theia entered the Alpha Sol System, explorers from Yakamoto discovered Gensokyo to be strikingly similar to their homeland, and eventually Japanese became Gensokyo's lingua franca, substituting the native Genian language. In the common era leading up to the Elemental Resurgence, Gensokyo became a leading power in space travel and exploration by amassing a technologically advanced, well-respected space fleet, of which its flagship Mandragora went on to become the flagship of the Theian space fleet.
Although the Elemental Resurgence had long since ended and Tenno had given up her divine powers, she was still worshipped and was the official head of state and head of government in absentia. The High Priests of Gensokyo were the de facto heads of government, functioning as a theocratic oligarchy under a partial necrocracy (as Tenno was presumed deceased.)

Language
The official language spoken in Gensokyo is Genian, a native Theian language. It belongs to the Northern Oriental family, meaning it is closely related to Geiran and Sapukoro, the languages of Gheyla and New Sapporo. The language is syllabic and mora-timed, much like the Japanese language on Yata to which it bears an uncanny similarity. As a result, Japanese became a lingua franca for communication between Gensokyo and the wider world, and the Japanese script was adopted into Genian. The traditional Genian script is seldom used outside of religious contexts.
