Sapience, not to be confused with Sentience, is the total culmination of a series of traits present within a species that includes the likes of self-awareness, abstract thinking, higher reasoning, possessing a personality as well as thinking intelligently.
Species that possess these traits are referred to as 'Sapient Species'.
While sapient creatures often also posses Sentience, it is not a definitive prerequisite for these traits, especially when dealing in the realms of artificial intelligence.
