The Theian Cataclysm, also known in literature as the Certamen Deorum, was a catastrophic event that almost wiped out all life on Theia, after the Hydro Archon Nihilantis was "hijacked" by another entity, Sanmor, taking control of his consciousness and thus his divine power. Ascending to the sky, he rained hell down upon Theia,[1] with the goal to obliterate all mortal beings, animate or inanimate.[2]
Ultimately, the ruling Iujado, seeking to redeem Aquilae's name tarnished by their own god's betrayal, initiated the supernova of their own star, ejecting Theia and Doluro into outer space, and using their own laser technology to guide them onto a course with planet Yata. However, their plan of redemption was in vain, as during their own escape attempt they were captured by the hijacked Nihilantis and brainwashed into a subservient army. Given the technology to carry out Sanmor's deeds, they flew ahead of the now drifting Theia and Doluro and arrived at planet Yata almost 400 years before the two planets would enter the solar system.
The Cataclysm left Theia and Doluro derelict on their surfaces, with survivors either retreating underground, like Kanar did; sealing themselves in barriers, like Gensokyo did; or simply adapting to the change, like Treimaria did. It marked the end of an elemental Theia, despite the fact that elemental power was mysteriously dwindling over the past 2 centuries. Due to the malicious origins of Nihilantis' hijacking, the Nine have given the SDS permission to instigate an investigation of the incident.
The End Days
The waning years of the pre-cataclysm era of Theia was marked by a steady decrease in the density of elemental energy - this was later confirmed to have been the fault of the TERAPRO "reactor." Tenno had noted in her diaries that around this time she noticed that the Genian Barrier was slowly diminishing.
