As may be expected from civilizations large enough to often span across multiple Star Systems, this page depicts the 'highest' coherent federated governments that exist below the level of diplomatic alliances. Within nearly all of these governments there can be found countless smaller local governments ranging from larger regions, to local 'sectors', to systems, to individual planets, and even regions on planets which each act with varying degrees of autonomy from their larger counterparts, with many interstellar civilizations even having countless essentially independent societies operating underneath their purview. These circumstances exist primarily due to the necessity of [[FTL Travel]], and the difficulty of consistent and 'live' [[FTL Communication]], forcing most interstellar governments who don't have the necessary workarounds developed or are too large for said workarounds to be implemented to function under a system of regional autonomy and self-governance in a largely confederated manner, aside from being capable of preventing their constituents of leaving the confederations of course.<tabber> |
