Dictator Esko Laine of Kalevala died from unknown causes, leading to a council of high-ranking officials of the ruling Kalevian-Ugric People's Party seizing power as an interim administration until the party radical Ilmari Toivonen was appointed as the next pharaoh. This proved to be incredibly controversial among liberals and leftists, leading to the Kalevian Centre Party organizing moderate military figures to launch a coup which installed Katja Volotinen as the interim president of the Seventh Republic of Kalevala, though Ilmari had managed to escape and organize a rival government in Muurmanni during this. Taking advantage of the chaos, the Kalevian Social Democratic Party, Kalevian Left Alliance, and Finnic Communistic Party formed the Kalevian Worker's Republic in the southeast.
The Pharaonate held the initial advantage, pushing back its two enemies rather relentlessly. The Centre Party's Republic began to gain more support over time as other parties joined their efforts as a part of a 'Democratic Coalition', leading to another coup-attempt in Muurmanni which failed as Ilmari avoided capture once more, forcing the coup-forces to retreat, though despite this the Republic managed to capture all of Ostrobothnia. As fighting continued, Tanume intervened on the KWR's side while Svealand provided some support, prompting the Republic to try to seize the initiative by launching an offensive into Kymeenlaakso and Karelia, allowing new recruits to be gathered to invade Northern Savo. The KWR and Republic signed a truce so that they may together focus on defeating the Pharaonate, leading to massive territorial gains as the Pharaonate was pushed all the way back up to Lapland and Kola. Seeing no way that their government would win, the civillians in Muurmanni rose up for the Republic and deposed Ilmari, leading to the collapse of remaining Pharaonate forces.
With only two factions remaining, fighting broke out between the Republic and KWR as Republic forces quickly besieged the KWR capital of Pietari. Moderate elements in the KWR offered defection if their political parties were allowed to still participate in Republic government, which was accepted, leading to a collapse of the KWR's war effort once Pietari fell. With KWR forces rapidly surrendering, Tanume moved in to occupy the KWR to keep up the fight, leading to Kalevala forming an alliance with Poland to partition Tanume along the Daugava, forcing the government and army of Tanume to flee into Tritonia to avoid capture as their country was quickly overwhelmed.
