Tired of years of less representation than their Finnic counterparts, the Baltic regions of Kalevala sought independence as the 'Republic of Tanume' was proclaimed. Tritonia threatened to intervene to conquer the area where Tanume was rebelling, but Kalevala stopped this by threatening to join the New Axis Powers as World War 8 was still ongoing. Kalevala's military quickly rushed south to put down the revolt, swiftly retaking Riga once it arrived. Celtic and Luvamatrilia began providing Tanume with very ineffective aid. Pravda, Kangaroo Island, Pizzaland, and Nopedro recognized Tanume's independence once Tanume managed to largely secure its claimed territories.
Kalevala did not give up thought and launched its much more capable of military to punch through a weak spot in Tanume's defensive lines by crossing Lake Peipsi. Facing encirclement, Tanume retreated westwards. Seeing its front actively falling apart, Tanume convinced the Åland Garrison to revolt and join their efforts, prompting to to occupy the city of Turku before local military forces could defeat their mutiny. Tanume saw success in the southern part of the front, though this soon became pointless as Kalevala made a massive breakthrough which cut Tanume in two as Tallinn fell. Facing imminent defeat, Tanume's armies began illegally escaping thru the Tritonian border with little to no resistance, with roughly half of its army managing to successfully flee and avoid capture as the 'Exiled Freedom Fighters of Tanume' was established.
