Gushihan Khan, the ruler of the Utsongan Khanate, was assassinated without having declared who his successor would be. His 3 sons, Dayan Khan, Songsten Khan, and Gyatso Khan could not decide on who should be the next ruler, leading to the country tearing itself apart over the issue. The battle began with Dayan leading his forces to conquer the capital of Lhasa from Gyatso
